Persistence

A colleague was recently mediating a conflict for a group of engineers. Their first attempt to problem solve and come up with a win/win solution did not go very well. The engineers began to become discouraged and believe that their situation was hopeless. My colleague then asked them, “What do you do when you have an engineering problem and your first attempt to problem solve does not go well?” Someone responded, “We try again.” “Then why would this be different?” asked my colleague. On their second attempt this group of engineers found the win/win solution that had been eluding them.

In conflicts, just like in other life problems, persistence is very helpful.
