Divorce and Post-Divorce Mediation

People going through a divorce need to make a number of decisions about the future. These decisions fall into a few categories:

  1. How will the assets and debts be divided?
  2. If there are children, how will they be parented in the future?
  3. Will there be any ongoing exchange of money between the parties, either in the form of child support or alimony?

Our certified divorce mediators help parties in Vermont and New Hampshire negotiate a fair solution to each of the items that must be decided within each of these categories. Working with divorce mediators is an alternative to having attorneys negotiate the divorce, and it is much cheaper. The goal of a mediated divorce is to help the parties reach sustainable agreements on each of the issues that must be resolved. These agreements are then written up into a document that is filed with the court. Since the parties are making legal decisions, attorneys are encouraged to review the mediated agreement before it is filed with the court.

"(The Mediators) were very helpful in bringing up issues that I had not even considered."

"What I found most helpful was having someone to help set up future plans to help keep us out of court in the future."

They spent twenty-five years together. They had three children, and a house. Sarah and Allen had fallen out of love but they realized they must continue to parent together. Divorce mediation provided the means for them to resolve their marriage and define their roles as parents who no longer lived under the same roof.
